Episode 24

Supporting Neurodivergent Individuals Across the Lifespan with PRT

About This Episode

In this episode, Dr. Jamie is joined by Jillian Schneider, for a thoughtful conversation about Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) and why truly effective support must extend across the entire lifespan—not just early childhood. Jillian shares her professional journey into the field of ABA, which began unexpectedly while completing a research-focused master’s program. She reflects on why naturalistic teaching resonated so deeply with her from the start, describing it as creative, meaningful, and relationship-centered rather than rigid or purely clinical. After more than a decade working with young children, Jillian transitioned fully into teen and adult services in 2023—a shift that profoundly reshaped how she thinks about early intervention.

Show Notes

In this episode, Dr. Jamie is joined by Jillian Schneider, for a thoughtful conversation about Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) and why truly effective support must extend across the entire lifespan—not just early childhood. Episode Highlights:

A Lifespan Lens on Early Intervention
Drawing from her work with adolescents and adults, Jillian introduces a “backward design” perspective: if we know what skills are essential for adulthood, how can we better support those foundations in early childhood? Skills like self-advocacy, boundary-setting, and initiation become central targets—not just compliance or task completion.

Behavioral Cusps & Meaningful Skills
Jillian explores the concept of behavioral cusps—skills that unlock new opportunities and environments. They contrast meaningful, socially valid skills (like initiating help or navigating transportation) with arbitrary goals that may create unnecessary stress. One memorable example: letting go of shoe-tying goals when slip-on shoes are a perfectly functional alternative.

From Independence to Interdependence
Rather than striving for unrealistic independence, Jillian emphasizes interdependence—the ability to manage oneself while navigating shared systems of support. For older learners especially, the goal shifts toward self-management, choice-making, and collaboration, rather than adult-driven prompting.

Spotlight on SARRC Programs

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, SARRC’s mission is to support neurodivergent individuals in living meaningful, self-directed lives. Jillian highlights several key programs, including:

  • Inclusive Preschool, serving children from 18 months through pre-K alongside typically developing peers

  • Transition Academy, where young adults live in supported apartments at First Place Phoenix while building real-world skills

  • Community-Based Services, supporting learners in homes, schools, and workplaces

Teaching Across Ages: Toddlers vs. Adults

The episode also contrasts how intervention looks across developmental stages. While ESDM for toddlers involves rapid, high-density learning opportunities, adult services often unfold over longer, holistic routines—like planning a meal or organizing a social event—where progress is measured across broader timeframes. Across all ages, collaboration remains key, with teens and adults actively shaping their goals and strategies.

Advice for Practitioners

Jillian encourages professionals to diversify their learning experiences, attend a range of conferences, and stay connected to the evolving conversations in the field. She highlights the importance of networking and reminds listeners that most experts are eager to share knowledge, resources, and support.
